A union representing Ontario crane operators and other heavy equipment trades is among the signatories of a memorandum of understanding in support of the proposed Energy East pipeline.
Local 793 of the International Union of Operating Engineers signed the agreement with TransCanada Corporation, which proposes to build the pipeline, on July 14 along with three other trades organizations, said a news release from the union.
The union supports the $15.7 billion pipeline because it will create “thousands of high-paying jobs” for its members and “deliver significant economic benefits to the entire country,” local 793 business manager Mike Gallagher said in the news release.
“We have a long history of working with TransCanada,” Gallagher said. “Pipelines like Energy East are true nation-building projects and we are ready and willing to work with the other unionized trades and contractor partners to get the job done. We will ensure the pipeline gets built right.”
The Pipe Line Contractors Association of Canada is among the other signatories to the agreement, the release noted.
